Who is more of a hero? Walter from A Raisin in the Sun or Odysseus from The Odyssey?
Odysseus is more of a hero than Walter. Although some people could think Walter is more of a hero because of some of some of the things he has done, such as having to secure an entire family financially. This is especially hard for a black family in the ‘50s because finding a well paying, stable, 9 to 5 job I would assume is hard at that time. He also had to turn down an a large sum of money to move out of his house. But this is nothing compared to what Odysseus had to go through.
One example of Odysseus is when he left Circe’s Island to go home. He had to leave abundant food, a bunch of women who gave him and his men massages, and lots of other good things. He and his men left all this to return home to his wife, son, and island. He never gave up either. While he might have stayed at one island for a longer period of time, he still left the island just to get home. Another example is when Odysseus was detained at Ogygia by Calypso for seven years. Although he may have stayed there for a long time, he eventually left. Although he had some help from Athena, Zeus, and Hermes, he built a raft himself and was not afraid of the ocean. If Walter were in Odysseus’s shoes, he would have no idea what to do. He would most likely die at Troy. It might be different if Walter had a similar upcoming as Odysseus, but I will not get into that. Another point is Odysseus could have died while he was on his “trip”, while Walter did not even come close to death.
