Tom Robinson, who was pronounced guilty in a rape case involving himself and the Ewell family, was shot in the back 17 times before being killed while in prison. Guards said they told him to stop and fired several warning shots into the air before having to shoot Robinson fatally. Guards also say Robinson could have possibly made it over the fence if he had two fully functioning arms. The only problem was that Robinson’s left arm, which was caught in a cotton gin when he was a young boy, is disfigured and unusable. His lawyer, Atticus Finch, said that Robinson actually had a “good chance” at becoming a free man if the case had gone to a higher court.
Robinson also had previously served time in jail for having a physical conflict with another man. Unable to pay the fine, Robinson was held in jail for 30 days. Robinson’s wife, Helen Robinson was devastated when she heard the news and declined to be interviewed. Robinson in addition to his wife, had three children. Witnesses say that when Helen received the news from Finch and his maid, Calpurnia, she fell to the ground. The two helped her up and they went into her cabin for a long period of time, before Finch and Calpurnia left the premises. Tom Robinson was sent to Enfield Prison Farm while awaiting the final disposition of his sentence. The Ewell Family issued one single statement, which some may find distasteful and disrespectful but after all, this is what the Ewell family is about. The statement wasn’t recorded by our film crew but was told to one of our writers who said Bob Ewell, who supposedly saw Tom fleeing away from the scene right after he committed the crime, said something along the lines of “he had it comin’”. We went back to the Ewell home but were greeted by small, unbathed children who chased us off the property yelling angry sounds at us.
